seventh son, born 17th May 1842. A civil engineer, he
resides at Motherwell, Lanarkshire. He married, 27th Sep-
tember 1870, Annie Cuthbertson, by whom he has a son,
Robert Burns, and a daughter, Grace.
Isabella, eldest daughter of Robert Burns Begg and Grace
Beveridge, was born 28th May 1831 ; she married, 9th Au-
gust-1866, Andrew Vannan, distiller, Borrovvstounness. Jane,
second daughter, born 4th January 1844, died in infancy.
Grace Jane, youngest daughter, born 12th February 1846,
resides at Kinross, unmarried.
Gilbert Begg, fourth son of John Begg and Isabella Burns,
was born on the 16th February 1802. Entering the navy, he
engaged in several important services, and took part in the
Crimean war. He survives, unmarried.
James Hope, fifth son of John Begg and Isabella Burns,
was born on the 2d February 1809. He served in the 2Gth
regiment, and died unmarried at Chusan, in China, 2d
November 1840.
Edward Hamilton, sixth son of John Begg and Isabella
Burns, born 12th August 1811, died 2d May 1824.
Jane Breckenridge, second daughter of John Begg and
Isabella Burns, was born on the 16th April 1804; she died
on the 7th July 1822, unmarried. Agnes Brown, the eldest
daughter, born 17th April 1800, and Isabella Burns, the third
daughter, born 27th April 1806, are both unmarried; they
reside at Bridge House, Alloway.
John Burnes, fourth and youngest son of William Burnes
and Agnes Broun, was born on the 12th July 1769. He died
in his fourteenth year, and his remains were deposited in the
churchyard of Mauchline.
