" The Governors have only further to ask the attention
of Counsel to the Burgess Act of 1876, hef ore referred to,
and on consideration of it, and the extracts before quoted,
1st December 1450.
"The Burges air payes for his Burgess-ship vjs. viijd. He that buys his
burgess-chip payes xls. Ane Burges be richt of his wyfe payes vjs. viid.
At this time many ar maid Burgessis and call it postnati et postnate of their
fatheris."
Under same date there is another entry of which the following is a trans-
lation : — " David Adminby was made a hereditary Burgess in right of his
uncle John Crysteson."
30lk October 1453.
Of this date there is an entry, of which the following is a translation : —
"John Heane junior is made hereditary Burgess in right of his uncle Thomas
Spens, and paid for the freedom spices and wines, Thomas Lavington being-
surety."
From this entry it would appear that John Heane was admitted a Burgess
in right of his mother's brother.
7th October 1462.
Of this date there is an entry, of which the following is a translation : —
"John Chapellane made gild brother in right of his wife Agnes, daughter of
John "White and compounded by paying twenty shillings."
Before Michaelmas 1472.
" Before Michalmas 1472 ane James Furde Burges be his wyfc for vjs. viijd. "
29th January 1477-8.
Under this date there is an entry of which the following le a translation : —
" Thomas Haliburton made Burgess and guild brother in right of his wife, &c,
and paid spices and wine, and for the gild twenty shillings.
23d March 1507-8.
"The quhilk day it is stated and ordanit that in tyme cuming the privi-
eges of burges barnes be observit and kepit in this wis that the burges eldest
son sail pay enterand as air to his fadpr sail pay for his Burgesry vjs. viiid.
and for gildry enterand be hes fader brother of the gild xiijs. iiijd. and for the
second son his Burgesry xiijs. iiijd. and for his gildry xxs. and siclike the
