here, therefore, ought to be the final exit of
the duke of Gordon in Lochaber and Bade-
noch.
By the honesty, humanity, and justice
of Ring William, the pretending superiors
were disappointed in their holy crusade,
and pretensions against the persons and
properties of the descendants and vassals
of the family of the Isles, and by the inter-
vention of Coll of Keppoch, anno 1691,
peace was restored to the West Highlands
and Isles, without costing his Majesty one
farthing, which the reader may contrast
with the conduct of the earl of Breadal-
bane, as to the ten thousand pounds, and
the affair jof Glenco.

grant of 1707, the family of Argyle became so in every res-

and his people, would have fallen into humane hands, instead
of being devoured by savages. The writer supposes this supe-
riority to have been, in consequence of the grant of justiciar-
.general of the Highlands and Isles, after the death of the last
Lord of the Isles,
