After this summary of the characters of the Stuarts, with
the sorrows they have so patiently endured, are we not justi-
fied in asserting that this unfortunate family has been " more
sinned against than sinning ?" In the pensive reflections of
Duppa, we would conclude, "If it be possible to derive alleviation
from the sorrows of others, let the individual who is disposed
to complain of his own ills, think on the Stuarts, who for
succeeding ages seem to have been born to sovereignty only to
feel with more bitterness the reverse of fortune ; and it is
yet a subject of melancholy interest to reflect, that with the
Lineal Descent their misfortunes still pursue the Heir to their
hereditary honours ! "
