Charles Emanuel IV. — Mild, pious, amiable, pacific,
well-meaning, and just; but, from infirm bodily health, sadly
deficient in firmness and decision of character. " This king,''
says Wrightson, " though endowed with estimable qualities,
was incapable, through feeble health, of grappling with the
dangers of his position." (p. 62.) " Charles Emanuel," says
Gallenga, " suflFered severely from nervous afiections, and his
moral courage was greatly impaired by the condition of his
shattered frame."t
Victor Emanuel I. — " Was a righteous, generous, in-
genuous man;" J warlike, chivalrous, magnanimous, and
ambitious. " Even those," says Wrightson, " who were averse
to his political maxims, acknowledged his private virtues, and
regarded him personally with respect. "§
Beatrice,DuchessofModena, was a most amiable princess:
indeed, the four daughters of Victor Emanuel, the late Duchess
of Modena and her three sisters, the late Queen of the Two
Sicilies, as well as the ex-Empress of Austria and ex-Duchess
of Parma, were noted for their mildness, popularity, and piety ;
to mention the name of the kind ex-Empress of Austria, the
consort of Ferdinand, so justly surnamed the Good, is sufiicient
eulogium in itself, and needs no comment from our pen. The
late Queen Christina of Naples was equally beloved, and her
memory is to this day fondly cherished by the people of that
sunny clime; she died in 1836. The Duchess of Modena
deceased in 1 840.

Mary Theresa, Princess of Modena. May she inherit
