7« Catherine. — Baptism Register. — " Perth, Fe-
bruary 27, 1571-2. Pater, William Lord Ruthven.
Witnesses, Harry Lord Meffen, and Patrick Lord
Drummond. Nomen, Catharine Ruthven." The
following memorandum is added in the Register :
" My Lord Meffen was slain by an gun out of
the Castle of Edinburgh, the fourth day there-
after."
Catharine is not mentioned in the Books of the
Peerage. Perhaps she died in infancy ; or may
have been that daughter who remained unmarried,
and to whom Lord Strathallan gives the name of
Barbara.
8. Beatrix. — She is not mentioned in the Baptism
Register. I apprehend she was the youngest of
William Earl of Gowrie's daughters. She attend-
ed the Court, as a Lady of the Bed-Chamber of
Ann of Denmark, the wife of King James VI. and
was the special friend and confident of that Queen.
Some little time after the year 1600, she was mar-
ried to Sir John Hume of Coldingknows, and their
Pittencrief was Barbara. But Douglas was mis-
taken.
