Experiences of the Great War

In reserve for Hill 60

George Ramage knew by 9 May 1915 that his time for serious frontline fighting was close at hand.

He recorded the situation in his diary entry for that day.

'Hill 60', to which he refers, was an important vantage point near the city which was captured and lost by both sides in fierce fighting. The 'huge black cloud' over Ypres could be seen as a portent of things to come:

'We are to be reserve battalion for any battalion of our brigade before Hill 60 that may suffer too grievously … these damned men simply can't keep cool … while paraded saw huge black cloud over Ypres — long cloud trailed towards us or miles beyond us.'
