For George Ramage, the transition from civilian school teacher to ordinary soldier came in 1915, just six months after the start of the First World War.

He signed up at Edinburgh, where he had been working. Within a matter of months had been trained and dispatched to France, where the British troops were desperately defending the crucial Ypres salient.
