Ypres in flames
George Ramage's diary gives regular updates on the devastation caused by the German onslaught at Ypres in 1915:
'11 May 1915 — 6pm: Ypres still burning … great cloud of smoke trailing along the heavens many miles long, on its way to England with message for help — all very sad — towers of cloth hall are no longer visible …
'8pm: Huge fire at Ypres — whole town seems to be in flames — shockingly sad as the Germans have deliberately set it on fire and the civil population are probably scurrying away, terror stricken' …
'9pm: Ypres gorgeously ablaze — red clouds of smoke above and brighter glow beneath.'
