The area in which Lance Corporal Ramage was fighting was also subject to attack by mines.

The enemy would blow up the front line by burrowing under it before detonating huge amounts of explosives beneath it.

Both Allies and the Germans used this technique, described by Ramage in this diary entry for 25 April 1915:

'It was intimated that we were to blow up two German trenches on Sunday night — Certain tremblings felt in our trenches made officers suspect that Germans were preparing to blow up our trenches — use of bamboo walking stick with telephone receiver on top to detect noises below surface.'
