Experiences of the Great War

Grenade practice

After his arrival at the front, Lance Corporal Ramage was ordered to train as a grenadier — a grenade or 'bomb' thrower.

This was a highly dangerous activity. As Ramage himself puts it in his diary entry for 2 May 1915: '… the bombers are the suicide club'.

In the same entry, he describes his last practice session before launching a real grenade attack:

'Last practice — with loaded hand grenades — rush forward with grenade and rifle, all throw bombs simultaneously into trench on the order from one of us, fall flat immediately and wait until supporting party rushes up and then all charge together into trench.'
