Experiences of the Great War

Signing up

George Ramage had been a teacher before the First World War. He was already 32 years old when he enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders, the famous Scottish regiment based in Aberdeen, where he had been at university.

Ramage was older and better educated than many raw recruits, and this perhaps made him view things with a more critical eye than some of his fellow soldiers.

This photo shows a Gordon Highlanders machine gun corps during Ramage's time.
