Experiences of the Great War

Off to war

The First World War came about with amazing rapidity.

Due to a complex series of treaties linking the major powers, a seemingly unimportant Balkan conflict suddenly erupted into a major European war in just over a month.

Germany invaded Belgium on 1 August 1914 and under the Treaty of London of 1839 Britain was obliged to defend Belgian neutrality.

The General's diary

19 August 1914

'Everything possible is being done to get the men fit with route marching etc'
