Experiences of the Great War

Dartmoor Work Centre

Dartmoor Work Centre — later renamed Princetown Work Camp — was one of several labour camps established around the country to accommodate conscientious objectors.

The terms of the Home Office Scheme were harsh:

  • There were fines for being late (one penny for every five minutes)
  • 'Insolence' was an offence
  • Conscientious objectors were forbidden from attending public meetings or possessing anti-conscription literature.
