forms a striking and picturesque object, from the
Quays of Greenock, distant six or seven miles, to, and
from which, Steam Boats pass daily, during the ba-

There are here two Banking Houses, the Greenock
Bank, established in the year 1785, and the Renfrew-
shire Bank, in 1802. A Gas Work has lately been
introduced, and its lofty stalk, with those belonging
to the different Sugar Houses, add much to the pic-

The weekly Market is on Friday, and annual Fairs
are held on the first Thursday in July, and on the
fourth Tuesday in November.
The Population of Greenock and Crawfords Dyke,
are thus stated in the year 1695, at 1651, — in 1755,
3858,— in the year 1 782, at 1 2000,— in 1 81 1 , at 20,000,
and in 1821, at 25,000, besides Mariners at sea, or a-
broad.
