There are two types of Team Competition. In both Individual and
Team events the contestants wear a team colour of Red or White.
(a) SOATARI SHIAI (League Tournament)
(b) KOHAKU SHIAI (Red and White Contest).
Soatari Shiai. In the Competition the two teams line up on each side
of the Tatami. Successive pairs fight off each bout with the winner
being awarded a Team point (Ippon). The team with the highest total
win. In the initial stages of a large competition, this is the quickest
method of fighting off the preliminary rounds.
Kohaku Shiai. This is the most exciting form of competition. In this
competition the opposing teams are lined up on opposite sides of the
Tatami. Starting with the junior grades, the teams fight off the bouts.
The winner of a bout remains on the Tatami to fight the next senior
of the opposing team. The team with the most players uncommitted
win the match. If both teams fight through to the last player (usually
the,Team Captain) the match is decided by the winning of this bout,
