JUDO
Improvisation of Equipment
Tatami (Mats)
The Tatami, or mat, is of rubber or straw. A good substitute for the
mat can be made with ordinary PT Mats, but a smooth unbroken
surface is essential. The wooden top of a boxing ring for a foundation,
with a rectangle of 9 PT mats covered by the ring canvas, make a good
fast surface. The canvas can be laced to small hooks placed at 18-inch
intervals on the underside of the woodwork. The gaps at the junctions
of the mat corners should be packed with rag or paper. As the mats form
an 18-foot square, they are approximately a foot short, in each direc-
tion, of the wooden base. Chalk a clear line to mark the edge of the
padding. Frequent checks should be made to ensure the mats have
not spread.
Judogi (Suits)
There is no serviceable substitute for Judogi, as the extreme strain
on the seams of a normal garment would render it useless after half a
dozen practices. However, Denims without buttons and the jacket
worn inside out, to prevent trapping the fingers in the pockets, etc.,
will provide a temporary Judogi. A judo belt (2/6d. each) worn cross-
wise on the shoulders (see illustration) will greatly prolong the life of
the jacket. This method is used in Japanese schools to practise Uchi-
Komi without Judogi.
