Racing
Racing in Malta since the war has been swinging steadily towards
trotting races, and there is now only one flat race at each meeting.
This is due, in part, to the expense of importing suitable thorough-
breds from Europe, but even more to the scarcity of light-weight
jockeys.
Service participation in this sport is consequently restricted to
the provision of Stewards and other Officials.
KENYA
From the riding aspect, Kenya is a most attractive station.
Every form of horse activity may be had in the main military
stations and every possible support is given by the settler to encour-
age the soldier to participate with him on an equal basis. With
the possible exception of polo, which is of a high standard, all
other mounted sports are of a lower standard than the United
Kingdom and the soldier is able to hold his own in competition
with the civilian.
Saddle Clubs
Horse activity in the army centres round the saddle clubs, all
of which have animals available for polo, hunting and hacking.
Riding instruction for adults and children can be obtained in all
stations. Owing to the low cost of labour and forage, it is possible
to keep a horse in an up-country station for
Ar,5
per month. As a
result many soldiers eventually buy their own horses.
Polo
Polo is played in all the large centres in Kenya and soldiers
may join the clubs at reduced subscriptions. Each KAR unit has
this year produced its regimental team and the first inter-unit
tournament has been played, the winners being 5 KAR. In addition
a senior KAR team has competed in six tournaments.
Racing
There are two major courses at Nairobi and Nakuru and most
up-country clubs have their own courses for gymkhana meetings.
Several serving soldiers race their own mounts.
Hunting
There are five packs of hounds in the country, the normal quarry
being the reed buck and jackal. Good sport is available at negli-
gible cost and one pack, " The RASC Nanyuki," is a military
pack, Gaptain G. W. Taylor, R.A.S.C., being the Master.
