permit any competitors affected by the act resulting in the disquali-
fication to compete in a subsequent round of the race.
(c) In all races run in lanes each competitor should keep in his
allotted lane from start to finish. If the Referee is satisfied, on the
report of a Judge or Umpire or otherwise that a competitor has
deliberately run outside his lane, he shall disqualify him, but if the
Referee considers that such action was unintentional, he may, at
his discretion disqualify, if he is of the opinion that a material advant-
age was gained thereby.
V. No competitor shall be allowed to rejoin a race after leaving
the track, either for the purpose of gaining a place or to pace or
assist another competitor.
72. No Attendant shall accompany any competitor on the mark
or in the race, nor shall any competitor be allowed to receive assist-
ance or refreshment from anyone during the progress of a race of
Io
miles or less.
The Finish
73.
The finish shall be a line drawn across the track at right
angles to the inner edge. (See Rule 65
(1)
).
Worsted (White Botany wool) shall, if possible, be stretched
over this line four feet from the ground and fastened to white posts
placed at each side of the finishing line at least one foot from the
edge of the track for the express purpose only of assisting the
Judges and Referee in placing the competitors.
The competitors shall be placed in the order in which any part
of the body i.e., " torso " (as distinguished from the head, arms,
hands or feet) reaches the line across the track.
In the event of a competitor falling he shall not be considered to
have finished until his entire body (head, arms and feet included)
has crossed the line.
Ties—Track Events
In the event of a tie in any heat which affects the qualification of
competitors to compete in the next round, or final, where practicable,
the tying competitors shall both qualify, failing which they shall
compete again. In case of a tie for the first place in any final, the
Referee is empowered to decide whether it is practicable to arrange
for the competitors so tying to compete again. If he decides it is
not, the result shall stand. Ties in other placings shall remain.

Protests
74. Any protest or objection by a competitor or team against
the conduct or placing of another competitor or team in any com-
petition shall be made to the Referee or judges immediately after
the conclusion of that competition. Such protest or objection shall
be made verbally by the individual competitor or by a member of
the protesting team. It shall be decided by the Referee on the
ground and his decision shall be final.
