ATHLETICS 217
The necessity for this will be apparent from the following example
which shows the judges' opinions at the finish of the 4 x
I1a
yards
Relay :
Referee Ist Green.
Judge "A" Ist Green.
2nd Blue.
Judge " B)$ 2nd Blue.
3rd Pink.
Judge " C " 3rd White.
4th Pink.
Judge " D)) 4th White.
5th Black.
The result of the race, as decided by the Referee from the other
judges' opinions, above, was : 1st, Green ; 2nd, Blue ; 3rd,
Pink; 4th, White.
Judge " B " said Pink was third. Judge " D " supports this by
saying that White was 4th, and therefore Pink could not have been
4th, as Judge " C " said he was.
A proforma (as shown on page 216) is required by the Referee,
and a judge's recording card (see para. 16, below) by each judge.
(b)
Team Races: At the conclusion of the One or Three Miles
Team Race runners should be shepherded into a funnel-shaped
pen, made of hurdles, in the order in which they cross the finishing
line.
Recorders are employed to record the order of finish of the
competitors and compute the result of the race, this they hand to
the Referee for checking and confirmation.
Two or three Judges are sufficient at the finishing line. Several
controllers should be stationed between the finishing line and the
mouth of the pen to see that runners enter the ;)en in their correct
order (as in a Cross-Country Run).
Do not have the pen too close to the finishing line. Allow at least
ten yards, otherwise accidents are likely to occur throug1h runners
being unable to pull up and crashing into the hurdles.
" Substitutes," working in 'pairs, should be stationed alongside
the narrow part of the funnel.
(c) Proforma Judge's Recording and Result Cards (see para. 16
(c) and (d), below) are recommended.
16. Specimen Result, etc., Cards.
