ATHLETICS
(b)
The following method of marking out the starts round the
track is recommended, the start and finish of the 440 yards race being
exactly midway along one straight, the start of the 220 yards being
exactly opposite the finish, and the
I
i o and 330 yards marks being
midway round each semi-circle. For greater accuracy it is recom-
mended that thin metal skewers be used and thin cord or wire
cable to join them, along one side of which the line-marking machine
can be run (all such lines being " radial " from the centre-point
of the semi-circle). The following instructions are based on a track
with 4 ft. lanes.
(c)
Lanes.
These should be exactly 4 ft. wide, the measurement
being taken from the
outside
edge of one marking line to the
outside
edge of the next line, working outwards from the wooden, concrete
or chalk border of the track.
(d) Intermediate distances.
First mark in chalk the starts in the
inside lane for 440 yards and 220 yards (As the measurement on the
inside lane is taken at 12 inches from the track border the correct
distance
on the border
for the full 440 yards is 437 yards 2 ft.
82 inches. The inside lane should therefore be marked at 218 yards

Measure from the
con-
tinuation of the scratch line in the first lane
the following distances
for Lanes 2-6 and mark the start lines, taking the measurements
8 in. from the outside edge of the line marking the inside of the lane.

(h) The foregoing method will enable the correct staggered distances
to be marked on any
440
yard track with two equal semi-circular bends
where
4
feet lanes are used, provided the start and finish line is exactly
midway along one straight.
Where the start is
not
halfway along the straight the staggered
distances for 33o and
IIo
yards should be measured as follows :
Find the mid-point of each semi-circle and stretch a string
across the track along the radius of the semi-circle passing
