produced to keep their interest. If possible, try to obtain a few
advertisements to offset the cost of printing. The compilation of
the programme will generally be left to the Honorary Secretary,
but the order of events should be approved by the Committee.
Points to note :
(a) The names of the main officials should appear on the
programme.
(b) Remember that you cannot arrange a satisfactory order
of events if competitors are to be allowed to compete
in several events.
(c) If a plunging competition is included put it at the begin-
ning, immediately after the interval, or after some event
which has not disturbed the water too much.
(d) If a team competition is being run, the method of scoring
points should be inserted in order that the spectators
can keep their programmes up to date.
(e) The name of the individual presenting the prizes should
be given.
(f
) Time your programme. This
will
help competitors and the
chief whip. A well-run show should start on time and
finish on time.
NOTES ON THE DUTIES OF OFFICIALS
Referee
A senior officer who will decide any question not catered for in
the Rules and whose decision is final.
M.C.
Choose someone who has a clear voice and can be heard whether
he has to use a microphone or not. If necessary the duties of the
M.C. can also be undertaken by the starter.
Starter
Before starting a race the Starter must satisfy himself that all
competitors, Judges and Timekeepers are in-position.
The competitors should be lined up just behind their " marks "
(usually towels placed on the edge of the bath). The Starter gives
the preparatory command " Take your marks " and after a short
pause, during which the competitors remain stationary, the signal
to start is given, either by the word " GO," a shot or a whistle. The
Starter should stand on the side of the bath so that he can see the
whole line of competitors.
In case of a false start, the competitors will be recalled by the
Starter blowing a whistle.
Judges
All Judges should have their duties
-
allotted by the Chief Judge
before the meeting starts. It is best for a judge to take the same
finishing " position " or positions in each race. The overlapping
method of judging can be adopted as in athletics, whereby Judge A
takes Ist and 2nd places, judge B 2nd and 3rd places, and so on.
