The track must be measured
Iz
inches outwards from the inside
edge. In measuring the lanes for distances up to and including 440
yards, the inner lane shall be measured as previously §tated, the outer
lanes eight inches from their respective inner borders.
In all Championships (whether County, Area or A.A.A.) or any
attempt for record on a grass track, the inside course must be
properly boarded or adequately flagged with flags placed on the
actual line.
It is recommended that the direction of running'be left-hand
inside.
Races up to
Izo
yards must be run on a straight course, stringed,
or in lanes, so as to allow a separate course for each competitor. The
width between the strings or lanes must be not less than four feet.
The stakes for strings should be not less than
20
feet apart.
Stations
6o. (a) In handicap sprint races stations at the start shall be
assigned to the competitors according to the order of their handicap
.starts, the competitor with the shortest start taking the station on the
left facing the winning post, the competitor with the next shortest
start the second station, and so on.
6o. (b) In scratch races stations for competitors shall be drawn.
In straight sprint races the competitor drawing No.
I
shall take the
station on the left facing the winning post, the competitor drawing
No. z the next station, and so on. In races on a circular track, the
competitor drawing No.
I
shall take the station nearest the centre
of the ground, the competitor drawing No. z the next station, and so
on.
6o. (c) It is recommended that
a
limit be placed on the number
of starters in level races. In general, the number should not be so
great as to create possible danger or unfairness to any competitor,
and if at the beginning of any level race the number of starters
appears to the Referee to be excessive, dangerous or unfair, he shall
have power to order that the competitors be divided into such heats
as he
in
his sole discretion considers necessary, and the event shall
be run off accordingly.
Starting Blocks
61. Starting blocks are permissible in level races, and the following
rules shall apply to their use :
(i) They must be constructed entirely of rigid materials.
(ii) they may be adjustable, but must be without springs
or other devices to give artificial aid to the runner.
(iii) They must be so constructed that both feet are in contact
with the ground while starting.
(iv) An athlete may use his own starting blocks, but such
starting blocks must be approved by the Referee.
(v) Their use is permitted only in races up to and including
44o yards.
(vi) Their use is optional.
