BOXING.
work. As always, work to be done at top speed and in rounds,
the duration of the rounds being gradually increased to the same
length as those to be fought in the competition. To avoid
monotony the order of work isbould be varied, but lighter
exercises should be taken first to warm up the system and actual
boxing should always be the last item on the evening's programme,
apart from a short corrective exercise to bring the system back
to normal. The evening's work should end with a good rub down
and massage, followed by weighing.
i Third Stage.
t
This is the last few days before the event and both road and
T
gymnasium work should be eased up and serious training with
the actual gloves cut down. There should be no boxing at all
the day or even two days before the •competition. jf P
During the whole of the three stages it is advisable to cut out
work on Sundays, except perhaps very light walking exercise in st,
the morning, as this makes a welcome and beneficial break for fo.
the men in training.

D.—NOTES ON GYMNASIUM TRAINING.
Skipping.
Work fast and vary footwork and ropework so as to avoid
making it mechanical and monotonous. Any variation, such as
crossing rope—" speeding up "—" slowing down," is beneficial,
and always end up the round by giving a short spell of from 10 to
30 seconds " all out."
Ball Punching.
The punch ball represents an opponent's moving head and
imagination must be used when training with it. Avoid any
fancy work and hit hard and fast from all angles, keeping the
feet moving throughout.
Bag Punching.
As for ball punching. The bag represents an opponent's target,
and training with it is to develop a man's punching power—
especially body punching—and correct hitting. Exactly the same
principles apply as when ball punching. Punch ball gloves or
knuckle pads should be worn when training with both these
articles.
Shadow Boxing.
Imagination again plays a great part in this, and moves should
be worked out and attack anticipated. When shadow boxing
always wear 8-oz. gloves to accustom the arms to their weight.
