MS.1669 - Rob Donn's poems
DescriptionA volume of poems of Rob Donn Mackay (1714-1778); according to a note at the front it was taken down from the dictation of the poet by a daughter of Rev. John Thomson, minister of Durness, 1764-1811: probably Janet (1766-1785). The present manuscript is a later, possibly revised, copy of her original manuscript which does not seem to survive. The paper is watermarked 1813-1815, and it contains a lament for Rob Donn by George Morison. The scribe is Thomson's successor at Durness, the Rev. William Findlater (1784-1869), who married another daughter of Thomson, Mary (1790-1868). Foliated 16-82, 82-94 by the scribe, with two unnumbered folios at the end; the more recent library foliation, 1-82, has been followed here, with the original foliation given in brackets. Publication references are to Hew Morrison's edition, 'Songs and Poems in the Gaelic Language by Rob Donn Mackay' (1899)

Gaelic manuscripts of Scotland
DescriptionA selection of Gaelic manuscripts from the 14th to 19th centuries. Many composite volumes with several authors and contributors, and subjects including songs, religion, history and mythology. Primarily in vernacular and classical Gaelic, but also Scots and Latin. Highlights include 15 medical manuscripts belonging to the Beaton family of physicians, 16th-century poetry in the Book of the Dean of Lismore, and the genealogies of the '1467 manuscript'.
