| Description | Small octavo notebook, ca. 1850, in marbled covers, ff.i-ii, pp. 1-110 (89-110 blank), f. iii. Bought, 1986. Contains 31 songs, of which 27 are in Gaelic, three in Scots and one in a macaronic mix. No names of tunes are given, but the refrains are marked with great care. The author remains unidentified but names the area of Loch Venachar, near Callander, as his home. There is further internal evidence in the songs to confirm this association. He studied in Glasgow, as can be gathered e.g. from the song "Geamhradh an an Glaschu", pp. 35-36, which mentions his learning Latin and Greek. The volume contains a mixture of traditional themes, but there is strong element of homesickness, the poet's missing his native Gaelic language and his dislike of Glasgow, which is the subject of several songs of dispraise. Three of the songs were published with translations in Michael Newton, 'Bho Chluaidh gu Calasraid : From the Clyde to Callander' (repr. with corr., Glasgow 2010). |

Many composite volumes with several authors and contributors, and subjects including songs, religion, history and mythology. Primarily in vernacular and classical Gaelic, but also Scots and Latin. Highlights include 15 medical manuscripts belonging to the Beaton family of physicians, 16th-century poetry in the Book of the Dean of Lismore, and the genealogies of the '1467 manuscript'. |
