| Description | Two soldiers making themselves comfortable in the ruins of a shattered house. One man is cooking on a tin-can brazier, while the other stands watching and smoking. Their kit is hung on the wall behind. A third man, carrying two water cans, appears to have stopped for a chat. This was possibly taken during the rapid Allied advance of Spring 1917. At this period, the supply lines were very stretched due to the destruction of communications, so the soldiers may often have found what they could in the ruins to make life tolerable.
