| Description | Dead German soldier, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph shows a dead German soldier crumpled into the shallow pit in which he had been sheltering. Beside him stands a Canadian soldier, identifiable as a cavalryman by his breeches. The Canadian is rather awkwardly holding a rifle. This may have belonged to the dead German, as there appears to be the strap of another rifle over the Canadian's left shoulder. The original caption of this photograph is a reminder that, on an individual level, many soldiers respected their enemies. [Original reads: 'One of the enemy who was killed by Canadian Cavalry a few minutes before-hand. He died a brave man.'] |
