| Description | Prince Higashifushimi Yorihito (1867-1922) with General Douglas Haig, beside a general staff car near the Western Front. Born in Kyoto, Prince Yorihito was the seventeenth son of the Higashi-Fushimi royal dynasty, and succeeded as second head of the House of Fushimi-no-miya in February 1903. Sir Douglas Haig is the gentleman welcoming the Prince. As part of its growing power, influence and confidence, Japan was the first non-white nation to form a full alliance with Britain in 1902. The terms of this alliance allowed Japan to declare war on Germany on 23 August 1914. Aside from its activities in Manchuria and China, plus its occupation of some German-held Pacific islands, most of Japan's wartime operations were performed by the nation's powerful navy.
