| Description | Prince Yurihito of Higashi-Fushimi (1867-1922) with Field Marshall Douglas Haig, at a train stop near the Western Front. Born in Kyoto, Prince Yurihito was the seventeenth son of the Higashi-Fushimi royal dynasty, and succeeded as second head of the House of Fushimi-no-miya in 1903. Sir Douglas Haig is the bareheaded gentleman standing beside the Prince. As Japan was yet another of the many combatants dragged into the conflict, it should not be too surprising to see a member of the Japanese royal family visiting Haig on the Western Front. As part of an alliance with Britain, Japan declared war on Germany on 23 August 1914. Apart from activity in Manchuria and some German-held Pacific islands, most of Japan’s wartime operations were performed by the country’s powerful navy.
