| Description | All the major members of the royal family visited the Western Front during the conflict, and this photograph captures The Prince of Wales on one of his visits. Field Marshall Haig is the bareheaded gentleman on the left of the image, and the uniformed Prince of Wales is in the centre. Note the wooden walkway at the side of the train - the Western Front equivalent of the red carpet. It is likely that this photograph might well have been deployed for propaganda purposes. Following in his father’s footsteps, The Prince of Wales also endeavoured to improve morale and support the war effort by visiting the troops near the front line. Edward’s younger brother, George, also visited the Western Front while their father, George V, regularly corresponded with General Haig. It was during World War I that the royal family changed their names from Hanover to Windsor and Battenberg to Mountbatten. [Original reads: 'Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig with H.R.H.
