| Description | The power and noise of all these animals and men on a purposeful move would have been a new sight for most of these conscripted soldiers. The quality of the light, the soldiers in their trenches and the field of mud do, however, give the scene a slightly depressing atmosphere. Cavalry units tended to be closely knit, cohesive groups due to the nature of the job. Not only were horses precious resources at the Front, but each man had to be able to multitask in case a member of the group was lost or the men had to fight on foot.
