| Description | King George V presenting General Pétain with a decoration. Both men are standing in a marquee. In the background a group of uniformed men, mainly other members of the French military are visible. The bestowing of decorations was one of the main duties carried out by the King during his visits to the Front. Between 1916 and December 1917, there were only two British official photographers sent to the Western Front by the Government and Military. The first was the ex-'Daily Mirror' photographer Ernest Brooks. He was quickly followed by John Warwick Brooke, who originally hailed from the Topical Press Agency.
