| Description | King George V (on the right) and M. le Maréchal Pétain. They are standing in what looks like a large town square. It is an unusual image in that most other photographs of the King include an entourage of high-ranking military officials. This particular photograph was taken by John Warwick Brooke, during one of the King's visits to the Western Front. General Pétain played a number of crucial military roles throughout World War I, culminating in his appointment in March 1918 as Commander-in-Chief of all French Forces.
