| Description | Cardinal Bourne arriving at the Front. According to the photograph's original caption, he is there to conduct a service for Irish Troops. He has just alighted from a car, and is surrounded by four uniformed men one of whom is possibly an army chaplain. There is a large building in the background, and the ground underfoot is very muddy. It is thought this photograph was taken by the British official war photographer, John Warwick Brooke. Throughout the war, religious and political leaders, members of royalty and dignitaries from many countries visited the Western Front. Cardinal Bourne's visit would have helped some men reaffirm their faith at a time when many found themselves questioning their religious beliefs.
