| Description | General Haig and, to his left, the Commander-in-Chief of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force. It is very likely that the Commander-in-Chief in this case is General Tamagnini. Both men are holding canes and are smartly dressed in their uniforms. They appear to be waiting on a platform. A number of uniformed men can be seen milling around in the background. During the war, visits to the Front by heads of state, members of royalty and dignitaries were frequent. It was an important way of maintaining good relations between those countries involved, and also of boosting morale amongst the troops.
