| Description | A corrugated iron shed is built into an embankment of loose dirt. The surroundings in fact are dominated by dark, loose mud, interspersed with some low-lying shrubs. This creates quite a barren and bleak atmosphere within the image. The roof of the shed also has a lining of cloth over the top. There is a set of very square steps running down from the doorway to join up with duckboards. There is a soldier in a tin helmet ducking down out of the doorway while the King is striding down the steps in front of him. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have taken this photograph. Royal visits were an integral part of Royal duties. They instilled a sense of morale and gave the impression of comradeship to the troops whilst allowing the monarchy to judge for themselves the condition of the Army.
