| Description | Sawmill at the Front. The picture is taken from inside a shed, which is in a field close to a forest. The furthest part of the shed, also the entrance is, open to the elements. The covered part of the shed is a hive of activity. In the background there are stacks of logs sitting on a machine with two soldiers working around them. Three soldiers are standing on the ground in front of a platform which is holding a log. Three men are standing on top of the platform, one of whom is guiding the machinery over the top of the log. Sawmills were set up close to the forest where they were felling trees, this cut down on transportation times and costs and meant there was always a ready supply of wood. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
