| Description | Four women are sitting in a vintage car with another woman sitting behind the wheel. The women are all well dressed with jackets and hats and are looking at the camera. They seem relaxed but only three of them are smiling: the others look quite severe. It is sunny and there are reflections on the windscreen as a result. The car is sitting in a leafy lane with an open field in the background. The road the car is on, although a dirt track, seems flat and mud and hole free! The YMCA is a dedicated youth organisation which works with both male and female members all faiths. During the war, however, 5,145 women worked in YMCA military canteens although it was not until after the Second World War that women were admitted to full membership. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
