| Description | The splintered remains of Delville Wood, France. The photograph has no particular context- no landmarks or distinguishable features. It is taken up a slightly rising slope which continues until the horizon. The ground has no topsoil left and is now just a mass of wet, sticky mud. Most of the trees have been completely exposed and are sticking up out of the ground. The density of the stumps reveals that this would have been quite a pleasant, substantial wood. The stumps, however, are stripped and fragmented for as far as the eye can see. A lot of French land was devastated by the movement of troops and vehicles as well as the ravages caused by bombs, shells and artillery. As a result agriculture during the war came to a stand still in these areas and the land took many years to recover.
