They are both looking into the camera. The soldier is wearing a steel helmet and full uniform, with a small pack tied round his chest. He is looking at one of the young girls. In the background there are a number of buildings. Scenes like this were commonly used as propaganda, intended to boost morale amongst the troops and provide reassurance to those at home.
