SCOTTISH CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION

Ordinary Grade
Friday, 18th May—1.30 p.m. to 4.15 p.m.
Candidates should attempt FIVE questions, two from
Section A, one from each of Sections B and C, and one
other question from any Section.
Marks may be deducted for bad spelling and bad
punctuation, and for writing that is difficult to read.
The value attached to each question, or to each part
of a question, is shown in the margin.
SECTION A
Great Britain Marks
1. Study the accompanying map of the Rhondda Valley, and from the evidence
provided, answer the following:—
(i) What are the main occupations of the people ? (5)
(ii) What suggests that the land is used for agriculture and recreation ? (3)
(iii) How have communications been influenced by the general relief of the
area ? (7)
(iv) How has the pattern of the settlement been influenced by physical features ? (5)
2. Answers to this question should be written in the separate map sheet
provided.
(a) (i) Identify the areas marked A and B in the outline map. (1)
(ii) Describe the farming in area A or area B, and show how the Government
has helped agriculture in the area chosen, taking as an example any
ONE farm product or type of livestock. (6)
{b) (i) Identify the towns marked X, Y and Z. (3)
(ii) Town Z is a new town. What are the basic industries in this area ?
How successfully is the new town being developed ? (4)
(iii) Name three industries found in or near town X. Give three reasons why
the area is favourable to their development. (6)
