3. (a) Figure 3 shows packing cases, each weighing 500 lb., sliding down a
chute AB, connecting two floors of a factory. The coefficient of friction
is 0-3. If the cases pass the point A at 1 ft. per sec., determine:—
(i) the velocity at which the cases pass point B; (12)
(ii) the time taken for each case to descend from A to B. (3)
(b) A shaft of 3-| in. diameter, running at a speed of 240 rev. per min., is
supported by a bearing on which it exerts a force of 300 lb. If the coefficient
of friction between shaft and bearing is 0 • 04, determine the horse power
absorbed by friction. (5)

Description | Examination papers for the School Leaving Certificate 1888-1961 and the Scottish Certificate of Education 1962-1963. Produced by the Scotch (later 'Scottish') Education Department, these exam papers show how education developed in Scotland over this period, with a growing choice of subjects. Comparing them with current exam papers, there are obvious differences in the content and standards of the questions, and also in the layout and use of language |
