Leigh & Newdegate, or A pill for Spooner

(183) Leigh & Newdegate, or A pill for Spooner

[NLS note: a graphic appears here - see image of page]

LEIGH & NEWDEGATE,
                     OR
A PILL FOR SPOONER,

The Polling time is coming on,
See them run in each direction,
M ark who you depend upon,
Or give your vote at the Election,
It s not the good deeds Spooner's done
That I am going for to mention,
Neither will he promise one,
Nor say he has a good intention.

            CHORUS.

Coventry is all alive,
See them run in each direction,
To Lee and Newdegate, they drive,
And Vote for them at the Election.

Spoonye's promised nothing it is true,
So nothing there can be expected,
Vote for the colours of Red and White.
For they ought to be respected,
Leigh is no Tory yon may see.
Spooner thinks it's very funny,
That he supported cannot be,
In favour of the paper money.

Now Spooner ought to have a pill,
As large as ever he could swallow,
For voteing for the church rate bill,
I heard some voices far to hollow,
To many honours he is prone,
Peeping Tom himself was laughing,
The church rate bill it is well known
So let him have a little chaffing.

This large and populated town,
No doubt but many well remember,
'Twill be a place of high renown,
"Twill send forth some able members,
Now if there's an able thing began,
I don't mean the truth to smother,
It's only sanctioned by the one,
And quickly undone by the other.

Pray do not let this be forgot,
If Spooner's returned he soon will show it
He's reckoned up as a bad lot,
Many people well do know it,
I heard that Leigh he did repeat,
That he should never like a Tory,
But if that he should gain a seat,
Then he whould be in his glory.

If you should vote for Spooney man,
I firmly think you must be dreaming,
One who will do all he can,
To crush the poor by roguish scheming,
Monopoly will be his note,
Oppression carry on so steady,
That no one shall be free to vote,
But those who have the means already.

            CHORUS.

Leigh and Newdegate I'll tell you plain.
There's non that I would vote for sooner,
Red and White will never stain,
I'd vote for the d——I assoon as Spooner
