| Description | This ballad is concerned with 'Godfrey's Cordial' which was a patent medicine given to children troubled with colic. It appears from the text that it may also have been used by some doctors to drug and molest victims. It consisted of sassafras, opium in some form, brandy or rectified spirit, caraway seed, and treacle. There are seven or eight different preparations. Named after Thomas Godfrey of Hunsdon. First line reads: Oh dear, what a row and a riot. In two columns with a woodcut above the first. |
