Scottish Post Office directories

Glasgow's Broomielaw quay

Scottish Post Office directories for coastal areas often include information on their docks and quays.

Glasgow's 'Post Office annual directory' for 1835-1836, for instance, gives a list of fees for porters working at Broomielaw quay.

Such fees were defined very precisely and would depend on the carried goods and the walked distances.

Broomielaw quay's importance

The first quay at Broomielaw was built in the late 17th century, funded by the Glaswegian merchant Walter Gibson.

The quay's international importance was demonstrated in 1812 when Europe's first commercial steamer departed from Broomielaw.
