1430 SORBIE.
way between the Mull of Galloway, the
southern point of Kirkmaiden parish and
Burrow Head, at the southern extremity of
Whithorn parish
SHEUCHAN. see Stranraer.
SORBIE is a parish, on the south side of
the mouth of Wigtown Bay, and contains the
village of Sorbie and the seaport village of
Garlieston (which latter see) ; the first-
named is 3 miles inland to the west of Gar-
lieston and 6 south from Wigtown, with a
station on the Portpatrick andWigtownshire
railway ; the parish, which is in the small
debt court district of Wigtown andWigtown-
shire poor combination, lies for about 9 miles
along the coast, which is indented by the
bays of Garlieston and Rigg, and possesses
two bold headlands, Eggerness to the north
and Cruggleton Head to the south of these
bays ; the boundaries are Kirkinner parish
on the north. Glasserton and Whithorn on
the west, and the latter on the south-west.
The ancient Tower of Sorbie, now a ruin, is
about 1 mile north-west of Garlieston and
2 east of the village ; it was- a stronghold or
peel of the Sorby family, and subsequently
passed to the Hannays. Between the head-
lands of Eggerness and Cruggleton is the
Park and House of Galloway, erected in
1740 and a seat of the Earl of Galloway;
and on the headlands themselves are the
remains of two ancient castles, one of
which, Cruggleton Castle, is believed to
have been built by the Danes and Nor-
wegians in 1098, and shortly afterwards
fell into the possession of the Kerlies, or
M'Kerlies, who retained possession until
the Reformation. Previously, they owned
Carolton, now Carleton Castle, near Girvan,
which the Cathcarts obtained in 1824.
Cruggleton Castle is celebrated for one of
the successful exploits of Sir William
Wallace, the Great Scottish patriot, who,
after it had been taken by treachery, re-
captured it for his friend William Kerlie.
Eggerness was also built by the Danes,
but no particular account has been handed
down. The Established church at Millisle,
about 1 mile from Garlieston, and 2 from
Sorbie, and opened in 1877, is a fine
cruciform edifice in the Gothic style, with
a tower and spire rising to a height of
over 60 feet, and was erected at a cost
of about £2,500. The area of the parish
comprises 9,777 acres ; rateable value,
£12,908; population in 1891, 1,563, and in
1901, 1,373, including 528 in Garlieston.
