3nd the Admiralty has leased a piece of
land for the erection of new stations for
the coastguard, war-signalling, and wire-
less telegraphy. The parish church is a
neat edifice with an embattled tower : the
Free church, erected in 1889, is a hand-
some building in the Gothic style. The
extensive improvements in this place have
been largely effected at the cost of suc-
cessive owners of the Dunskey estate.
Acreage of the parish, 9,078; rateable
value, £6,630; population in 1891, 1,219,
â– and in 1901, 1,136; of the town, 451. The
â– population of the ecclesiastical parish in
1901 was 1,048.

south-east from Glenluce. The harbour,
though not of great extent, is commodious
and safe, and from it large quantities of
grain and potatoes are exported to Glasgow,
Liverpool and other ports on the west coast.
The houses in general are very well built,
and afford excellent accommodation for
families and tourists during the bathing
season. The principal hotel is the " Mon-
reith Arms." Population in 1891, 679, and
in 1901, 667.
