PORT LOGAN, see Kirkmaidex.
PORTPATRICK is a seaport town,.
burgh of barony, and a parish, on the Irish
Sea and on the west coast of the county,
in Wigtownshire poor combination and
Stranraer small debt court district. The
parish is about 5 miles in length from,
south-west to north-east, and 3 from north-
west to south-east, and is bounded by the-
parish of Leswalt on the north-west,
Inch on the north-ea8t, Stoneykirk on the
south-east, and the Irish Sea on the south-
west. Here is the terminus of the Port-
patrick and Wigtownshire railway, bj
which this place has communication, via
Girvan, with the north and west of Scot-
land, and via Castle Douglas and Dumfries,,
with the south of Scotland and England.
At Colfin, about 3 miles north-east from
Portpatrick, is a station on the Portpatrick
and Wigtownshire line. The port is 133 mile3
south-west from Edinburgh, 89 south-southt
west from Glasgow, between 34 and 35
west from Wigtown, the same distance
west-by-south from Newton Stewart, rather
more than 7 south-west from Stranraer, 117
from Dublin, 36 from Belfast and 21 frorA
Donaghadee (19 nautical), on the coast of
the North Channel. The town is small, but
is being greatly improved by the erection
of new houses and a large first-class hotel,
and the carrying out of an efficient system
of drainage and water supply ; its situa-
tion is delightful, having a fine southern
aspect, backed by a ridge of small hills,
and it is consequently a great resort for
visitors during the summer months. There
is a local golf club, which has a fine course
of 18 holes, and a club house. It was for-
merly, with the estate of Dunskey, the-
property of the Lords Montgomery, who re-
sided at the old castle of Dunskey, the re-
mains of which stand on the brink of- a'
precipice overhanging the sea. The pre-
sent Dunskey House is a modern residence-,,
with gabled ends, in the Scottish style,
and stands in beautiful grounds, 300 feet-
above the sea level, and commanding a?
magnificent view of the Irish Sea. About
1700 the Dunskey estate became the pro-
perty of the Blair family, whose heiress
married James Hunter esq. subsequently
created a baronet (1786), under the name-
of Hunter-Blair. The present owner is G-
L. Orr-Ewing esq. M.P., J.P. whose wife
is a grand-daughter of the late Sir Edward
Hunter-Blair bart. The quay is now almost
in ruins. Many years ago extensive and!
important improvements were made in the
harbour, under the auspices of the Govern-
ment and under the direction of 'Sir John?
Rennie, the engineer, for the accommoda-
tion of Her late Majesty's packets, and a
new basin of about 200 feet square was then
constructed, and connected with the hai>
Dour by means of a channel containing
ten feet of water at low tides. The town
is a lifeboat and rocket apparatus station.
