LESWALT is a parish, in Wigtownshire
poor combination and Stranraer small debt
court district, in the northern part of the
county; it lies between the Irish Channel
on the west and Loch Byan on the east,
and is bounded on the south by Portpatrick
parish, and on the north by Kirkcolm.
The surface of this district- is most agree,
ably varied with hill and dale, while the
sea' coast presents bold and rocky features.
The kirk is about 3 miles north from
Stranraer station 'on the P'orthpatrick and
Wigtownshire railway, and about 25 west
from Wigtown. Lochnaw Castle, which
stands in a small park, is the residence
of Sir Andrew Noel Agnew bart. D.L., J.P.
Acreage, 12,526; rateable value, landward,
£8,315; burghal (part of Stranraer),
£3,257; population in 1891, 2,320, and in
1001, 2,270, of which 1,291 are included in
Stranraer burgh. The population of the
ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 1,002.

NEW LTTCE is a parish, in Wigtown-
shire poor combination and Stranraer small
debt court district; until 1646 it formed
part of the parish of Old Luce, and is now
about 10 miles in length by from 5 to f
in breadth; the greater proportion of the
high ground in the parish is covered by
rocks or heath; f:he arable land, which is
not of great, extent, lies principally on the
banks of the rivers. The parish is bounded,
on the west by the main water of Luce,
which divides it from the parish of Inch,
south by Old Luce, east by the Turf water,,
which separates it from Kirkcowan, and!
north by Ayrshire. The village is on the
Luce at the point where the Cross water
falls into the river, and has a station on
the Girvan section of the Glasgow and
South Western and North British railways;
it is about 15 miles north-west from Wig-
town and about. 13 north-east from Stran-
raer. The Standing Stones of Laggangarn
have been taken in charge by the Govern-
ment Commission for the preservation of
ancient monuments. The Earl of Stair
K.T., L.L. is the principal landowner. The
area of the parish is 28,811 acres; rate-
able value, £5,000; population in 1891,
588, and in 1901, 557.
At Glenwhilly, about 5 miles north from
New Luce, is a station on the Girvan section
of the Glasgow and South Western railway.
